Dr. Verena Jaeschke, Managing Director of Hotel Oderberger, as a guest in the podcast ‘A glass of champagne’ by Marie-Anne Wild

It's a Family Thing

The HOTEL ODERBERGER BERLIN is a listed, family-owned boutique hotel. The historic hotel was formerly the city baths and was designed in 1898 – it had been closed since 1986. In February 2016, the Hotel Oderberger Berlin opened as part of the GLS Campus after extensive refurbishment. The highlight is the historic swimming pool in neo-Renaissance style. As a public pool, the Stadtbad is accessible to everyone, hotel guests and Berliners alike, and is therefore part of the public infrastructure in the neighborhood.

Dr. Verena Jaeschke (right in the picture), 2nd generation entrepreneur, passionate hostess, proud daughter and managing director, runs the Hotel Oderberger together with hotel director Tini Diekmann (left in the picture). Sustainability, digitalization and female entrepreneurship are topics that are important to them and that they are always pushing forward.

The GLS Campus Berlin

The Oderberger is part of the GLS Campus Berlin and operates an international language school and an agency for language trips and school stays abroad on the company’s own campus. Every year, more than 3,500 students and adults from Germany, Austria and Switzerland go abroad with GLS. GLS organizes language trips and school stays in 22 countries on 5 continents.

At the same time, the GLS language school in Berlin is attended by up to 5,000 students from more than 60 countries every year, who learn German and other languages in Berlin. The school has been named Star School Germany 5 times by a renowned industry magazine. The GLS Campus is unique with 40 seminar rooms, 50 studio apartments and 70 hotel rooms, restaurant and offices. The green oasis in the middle of Berlin is the company’s USP and makes GLS the largest language school in Germany.

Female Entrepreneurship

The Oderberger and GLS are family-run companies in the 2nd generation – with 150 employees and the company’s own campus in Berlin Prenzlauer Berg. GLS was founded in 1983 by Barbara Jaeschke (right), who still runs it today, together with her daughters Dr. Verena Jaeschke (center) and Dr. Reemda Jaeschke (left) since 2016.

GLS is a family business with a strong female founder personality, and this is also reflected in the company philosophy: the founder attaches particular importance to work-life balance and sustainability. Her company is a training company with above-standard pay. In 2020, the Oderberger was certified as a “top training company” by the German Hotel and Restaurant Association DEHOGA.

The commitment of GLS/Hotel Oderberger is not limited to company employees – GLS is also aware of the responsibility that a company has as a social player in its immediate environment. GLS is involved in the Prenzlauer Berg district and is a regular sponsor of cultural events.
