Sustainability
Let’s be green together! You do without room cleaning and we plant a tree – teamwork makes the dream work!
Sustainability in Oderberg
We attach great importance to the sustainable use of resources and would like to make a contribution to this as a hotel and event venue. Sustainability is therefore an important part of our corporate strategy. We do not understand sustainability purely in the ecological sense, but also integrate social and economic aspects.
We have been certified with the Green Sign label since 2022. We look forward to the support of our guests, ideas and suggestions can be submitted to the reception team.
Resource-saving energies & water consumption
We use 100% green electricity and our websites are hosted on servers powered by 100% green electricity. All our rooms are fully equipped with LED lighting. Our lighting throughout the premises is gradually being converted to LED lighting.
The power connection in the rooms is automatically disconnected when the room card is removed. We also work with timers and motion detectors to avoid unnecessary power consumption. An e-charging station is to be installed on the hotel grounds at the end of 2022.
The heating systems have smart thermostats and switch off automatically when the windows are open or the desired temperature is reached. We also have our own combined heat and power plant on our campus and use the waste heat from our heating system to produce electricity.
There is an in-house well for watering the green areas (no filtered drinking water required), and we also collect rainwater in an in-house trench, which is also used for irrigation. In all hotel rooms and public areas, there are signs on the taps advising guests to use this resource sparingly.
Avoiding plastic waste, paperless office & digitalization
Waste separation is a matter of course for us. At the same time, we are constantly working to reduce our waste production. Particular attention is paid to avoiding plastic waste such as individual packaging and plastic straws at our breakfast buffet. Together with the TooGoodToGo app, we work to save food every day.
Organic shower gel and lotion are available from refillable dispensers in the hotel rooms, SPA and public areas. With the Green Option, our guests can voluntarily forego cleaning their rooms for the sake of the environment.
Digital guest folders in the form of tablets eliminate the need for flyers or information brochures made of paper. In general, the consistent digitalization of processes in the front and back office helps to reduce paper consumption to a minimum, e.g. through digital check-in and automatic invoicing by email. Where we do still need paper, we only use recycled paper.
Regional purchasing & biodiversity
We pay attention to sustainable and regional purchasing, for example from our food and beverage suppliers (Andraschko Kaffeemanufaktur Berlin, Berliner Honig, Berlinsky Sekt, Rollberg Fassbier from Neukölln and BRLO Bier from Kreuzberg). On our campus with extensive green spaces, we have two herb gardens and fruit trees whose produce is used in the kitchens. A bee hotel, flower meadows, our own compost and birdhouses provide a habitat and protection for insects and small animals.
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
For us, sustainability not only means ecological awareness, but also social commitment. We regularly donate to the RambaZamba theater and Pfeffersport e.V., thus supporting two important inclusion projects here in our neighbourhood. In addition, we regularly award scholarships for German courses to refugees through our language school.
As an employer, we have joined the Charta der Vielfalt e.V. and are committed to implementing an inclusive corporate culture and hiring employees with diverse backgrounds. We welcome applications from all people regardless of ethnic and national origin, gender and sexual orientation, age, physical characteristics, disability, religion or marital status. We are committed to the principle of treating all applicants and team members fairly and avoiding discrimination.
Almost 150 people from over 15 different countries work on the GLS Campus, including the Hotel Oderberger, of which almost 10% are refugees. It is important to us to be a family-friendly workplace, which is why we do not schedule standard meetings outside the core working hours of 10 am to 3 pm. Flexible working hours (not just for parents) and variable hourly quotas are just as possible as sabbaticals or – where possible – mobile working at home and abroad.
