Dr. Verena Jaeschke, hotel manager at the Oderberger and phD in Cultural Studies, guested on the podcast ‘for a glass of champagne’ by Marie-Anne Wild.

It’s a family affair

Welcome to the extraordinary Hotel Oderberger.

Formerly a public baths dating back to 1898, the pool was shut in 1986 and no one swam for thirty years. In 2016, Oderberger Berlin opened its doors after extensive renovations, and a stalwart boutique spa hotel, bistro and cocktail lounge was born. Its central conversation and focal point is the Neo-Renaissance pool, yet its seventy rooms, two apartments and five tower suites are the perfect complement and comfortable bolthole for any Berlin visit. As part of the GLS Campus, Oderberger is a cultural hub, with its pool open to the public. It is an important part of Prenzlauer Berg’s infrastructure.

Entrepreneur and hostess Dr. Verena Jaeschke runs the hotel with her sister Dr Reema Jaesch and matriarch Barbara Jaeschke. At the heart of their second-generation, female-led business GLS – comprising two historic boutique spa hotels, a language school and city campus – is sustainability , digitalization and female empowerment.

A quintessential campus

The Oderberger is part of the GLS Campus Berlin, operating an international language school and an agency for language trips and school stays abroad on its own campus.

Every year upwards of 3,500 students and adults from Germany, Austria and Switzerland go abroad with GLS. They organize language trips and school stays in 22 countries across five continents. Simultaneously, the GLS language school in Berlin is visited by around 5,000 course participants from more than 60 countries learning German and other languages in Berlin. The school has been named Star School Germany five times by a renowned industry magazine, making it the nation’s quintessential place to study.

The GLS Campus has a standout40 seminar rooms, 50 studio apartments and 70 hotel rooms, plus a restaurant and offices. Its green oasis in the middle of Berlin is the company’s USP – featuring two herb gardens and an abundance of fruit trees – rendering GLS the largest language school in Germany.

Female enterprise

The Oderberger and GLS are women-run family businesses in their second generation – with 150 employees and their own campus in Berlin Prenzlauer Berg.

Founded in 1983 by Barbara Jaeschke, who still runs the ship along with her daughters Dr. Verena Jaeschke (center) and Dr. Reemda Jaeschke (left), the trio’s impressive business-wide leadership has received many entrepreneurial industry accolades over the years. GLS is a family affair with a dynamic female founder personality. This is reflected in the corporate philosophy: the founder particularly values the compatibility and balance of work and family life sustainability, as well as ecological. They drive a training company with above-standard pay. In 2020, the Oderberger was certified as a “top training company” by the German Hotel and Restaurant Association DEHOGA.

The commitment of GLS/Hotel Oderberger extends beyond company employees – GLS is also aware of the responsibility that a company plays as a social actor in its immediate environment. GLS is committed to the Prenzlauer Berg district and is a regular sponsor of cultural events. This community ethos welcomes local and citywide members of the public to make use of its facilities and enjoy its spaces alongside visiting guests from around the world.
